A Day Trip to Binibona and Moscari
Jun 17, 2015
The picturesque village of Binibona lies just over 48 km distance from Palma de Mallorca's airport. With a rental car from Mallorca Airport it takes just 44 minutes via the Ma-13 motorway to reach the villages of Binibona and Moscari, both of which offer ample opportunity to stretch one's legs and enjoy lovely countryside walks in this national park area.
After a little sightseeing tour of Binibona, leave your hired car from Mallorca Airport in the main square's car park in Binibona and set out on foot to enjoy the fresh country air and natural beauty of the place. Follow the signposting for the Ets Albellons Rural Tourism, but leaving the suggested detour firmly behind to the left, take the unpaved trail straight ahead. After a few metres you will come across a sign next to the Torrent de Sa Coma Gorge on the right which will show the direction in which you must go to follow the correct route.
Setting out into the Caimari National Park
Cross the gorge and follow the trail on the left, which runs parallel with the Torrent. After crossing a barrier, continue on this trail until you reach the next crossroad. Here the trail will change to a wide road. Bear left here, for you will be able to catch sight of Sa Penya Foradada on the right and Puig Mitjà, a 386 metre tall hill, on the left. The path is lined by traditional coal bunkers and kilns used in lime production practiced in the Caimari Mountains for centuries.
Once you reach the second fork, select the trail the descends to the left, running parallel with the gorge. After following this route you'll eventually reach a small clearing with a magnificent Holm oak at its heart. Now follow the trail ascending to the right of the oak. Follow the signposting, which will direct you off this wide stretch of trail and onto a narrow path to the left, which is quite steep and pebble-strewn.
Known locally as Sa Costa d'en Barral, this path leads to the Es Cocó des Ases, a plateau which affords wonderful views over the village of Binibona, and the peaks of Puig Caragoler and Puig Mitjà. From here onwards the trail descend, leading to the Ses Figueroles farmhouse. This ancient agricultural landscape boasts its very own beauty, full of trees and flowers and with the gorgeous backdrop of the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountain range set against a dazzling blue sky.
Things to do in Moscari and Binibona
If you're looking for somewhere to lunch or dine in the area, try the Can Furiós Petit Hotel, a country house hotel between Binibona and Moscari. The hotel's restaurant serves gourmet food and boasts an extensive wine list. Or try the Finca Es Castell, which serves a delicious four course Mediterranean based menu. At Can Calco Hotel seafood fans will find a great selection of delicious fresh fish dishes. You'll find a good selection of restaurants in the villages and surroundings, rather surprising, bearing in mind they are little more than hamlets.
The two villages lie in the heart of a national park, with a network of hiking trails that allow visitors to explore this lovely area on foot and at their leisure. Trekking through ancient olive groves, almond orchards and past meadows with fully grazing sheep, time seems to stand still. The tracks connect the four villages of Binibona, Caimari, Moscari and Selva and are popular with walkers and mountain bikers alike.
If you decide to stay in the agro-tourism hotels in the area or rent a private villa, do your weekly grocery shopping at Inca, where market day is on Thursdays and shopping is more fun and decidedly cheaper. Parking in these tiny villages can be a challenge, although it is possible to park your rental car from Mallorca Airport quite safely in the high streets of Moscari and Binibona.
